What to do in Munich

Of course Munich is famous for Oktoberfest, the party where everybody drinks gallons of beer while sitting at enormous beer tables. If you’re planning to go to Oktoberfest, no doubt it’s better to take a taxi! But if you’re not travelling in October or want to discover the city and surroundings, renting a car is recommended.

You can pay a visit to the enormous palace complex Residenz and the beautiful summer palace Nymphenburg Castle. Depending on the season, you can enjoy a chime with knights and coopers at the Neues Rathaus on the Marienplatz.

If you like shopping, Munich is the place to be! There is a big shopping mall where you can spend the whole day shopping and eating at the restaurants. The Shopping Mall is called Fünf Höfe, named after the five courtyards in the mall with different themes.

Some other interesting places you can visit are Deutsches Museum, the Englischer Garten, the Kunstareal, St. Peter’s Church, The New Town Hall (German: Neues Rathaus), Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche) and the Allianz Arena of the German soccer team Bayern Munich.

If you have the time, you can also visit nearby cities Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Nuremberg or Regensburg. If you decide to go for car rental in Munich it’s easy to make a daytrip to one of these cities. Driving through the German Alpenstrasse is recommended and also a visit to Neuschwanstein Castle.

If you are interested in the history of Germany during the second World War, it’s possible to visit the Dachau Concentration Camp near Munich. You can book a guided tour to learn more about the history of the camp. The prisoners in the camp were often starved to death and/or used for all kinds of inhuman experiments. The camp was originally designed for 5000 prisoners, but by the time the liberators arrived, there were over 30,000 prisoners in the camp. It will be a really intense and informative experience you probably will never forget.

The main Lufthansa Bus Service is the best way to get to the center of Munich. It is regular and cost only 11 Euros one way. It takes only around 45 mins. If you claim tax refund at the airport, the refund office is in the check-in area before entering the departure area. There is a petrol station located before you enter the main road to the airport. That is your best place to fill up your rental car. Try to look up where your car rental return entrance is before you proceed to the airport. Otherwise it is not easy to find.

Munich airport is modern, but typically more expensive and less efficient as Zurich Airport. So, if you have a choice and it might make sense to you to go via Zurich, definitely give it a shot.

Pack light! You can always buy things you need where you go. Definitely hit the Backeri and get a butterbrezen once you land and collect your bags! I never use the currency exchanges in the airport since my bank and credit cards charge minimal fees for international transactions and withdrawals. Definitely cheaper than the currency exchange! Much of Deutschland still prefers cash currency for everyday purchases and be sure to try to give exact change! Make sure you try Eis! It is amazing! The gelato is out of this world (Himbeer) Has always been one of my favorite flavors. Spaghetti Eis is also a super yummy treat! Enjoy the beers from all the different breweries and try new foods. You will not be disappointed! Most of all enjoy the sights —it is an absolutely gorgeous country! Have fun!

Go south to the Alps. Fantastic area. Avoid the mountain passes in the weekend, a lot of traffic on narrow roads. Add extra time driving in the Munich area, the traffic is dense.

Please do not book car rental from Buchbinder as they are the irresponsible and dishonest car rental company in Germany. I had very bad experience from them! Luckily I booked thru HolidayCars.com, trust they can solve my issue.

I use very often Munich airport for personal and business purposes. For me is the best, because a lot of companies have flights to Munich so i don't have to spend time searching for flights fit to my needs. And because of that the prices are correct for Munich airport. The rentals are placed convenient and returning the car was extremely accesible. I like very much to stay in the center of airport, to go shopping or eat something good. Munich airport is like a little cosy city market.

My plane delayed at Munich airport. After reporting to Keddy-Europcar they promised to wait for me after openinghours. So they did and reveived a good clear car. A client of an other company was stranded at the airport where at thetime no other rentalcompanyvwas open. Wecould give that stranded man a ride to his hotel..Big compliment for the service people of Keddy-Europcar at Munich airport.

I would highly recommend Hertz because they provided exceptional customer service at our rental pickup. I would suggest getting the rental company to set the GPS to whatever native language you speak. Also, if rental drop off will be out of normal hours, make sure to ask how exactly to drop off the car. We figured out that we just pull the car up to the rental return on the first floor. This is where security will ask you to leave the car keys in the car. Also this is where all of the different companies will require you to drop off the cars. So don’t be alarmed.

Travel is like life in compressed form - the highs are often higher and the lows often lower, perhaps in part because the anticipation of great things after all that planning is such a disappointment. My best advice is to keep an open mind. Yes, I know this is common advice, but actually doing it vs. just saying is is a lot harder, particularly in the face of the kind of disappointment often faced in the travel experience. A cancelled flight, a sub-standard car at the rental counter, a hotel without your reservation... it's all part of the experience. One way to get beyond the immediate disappointment is to focus on the lovely story you get to tell friends and family afterwards! Just thinking of the laughs you will get when you begin the... «I remember once when...» story is often enough to buoy your spirits to face the situation at hand. The other thing to remember is that the person in front of you may not have anything to do with the specific failure that is affecting you, and getting angry at them is futile. Think of them instead as the person who can help you out of that situation. Treating them with kindness and respect will most likely gain you far more towards finding an acceptable solution. Put yourself in their position - knowing the customer is upset at your company's failing and absorbing the abuse that often follows... while knowing you could do something, but just not wanting to help because of the person's attitude. Anger, though satisfying, is futile.
