Exploring New Jersey - Car Rental at Newark Airport

With easy access to the Big Apple, New Jersey is a classic holiday destination for anyone looking for a jam-packed trip filled with a variety of different activities. From the iconic Atlantic City where you can party all night at world-class casinos and entertainment venues, to the famous Jersey Shore, lined with soft sands and warm water beaches, there is so much to see and do here. But, you’re also in a great place if you want to spread your eagle wings and explore further afield, with next door neighbours like New York and Philadelphia just a short drive away.

To truly make the most out of any visit to the United States, including the state of New Jersey, the best thing you can do is rent a car. Public transportation is good, but it limits where you can go and when due to awkward timetables and extra costs. Here at HolidayCars.com, we help you compare the very best car rental companies available to you, starting with the ones situated right at Newark Airport.

Newark International Airport

Newark International Airport (previously known as Newark Liberty International Airport and Newark Metropolitan Airport) is the primary airport serving New Jersey. It is an incredibly popular airport, and is in fact one of three major airports serving the New York Metropolitan Area, closely following the famous John F. Kennedy International Airport. Its popularity is due to its incredibly convenient location, with it being only 12 miles southwest of New York City, 3 miles south of Downtown Newark, and 75 miles northeast of Philadelphia. A fantastic, modern airport with plenty of great amenities, it is the number one choice for starting a road trip to a number of different places, so renting a car here is a great idea.

Compare Car Rental Companies at Newark Airport

With at least 10 different world-renowned car rental companies to choose from at Newark Airport, you may be wondering how you’re going to know which one is right for you. So, we do all the hard work for you, using our clever comparison system to put together all the agencies and deals that suit you in a handy table. All you need to do is pick which one you prefer, book it, and then you can be on your way.

There you will find all the car rental services you need to pick up your car, so you’ll be on your way in no time. And, by booking in advance, not only do you save the hassle of trying to compare limited deals at the airport after a long flight, you will also have saved some money too, as it is almost always cheaper to book your rental car prior to your journey.

Newark is an easy airport to fly into with easy access to both the New Jersey Turnpike and trains to New York City. The AirTrain makes getting from terminals to rental cars easy.

New Jersey Transit is pretty reliable for getting to and from New York from NJ. There are many pick up points in NJ, and they go to Port Authority in NYC, among others. From Port Authority it is easy to take a subway to any part of the city. The Africa Center is a cultural institution in East Harlem, and is worth visiting. It is fun to walk around there. Also, we loved walking around on the High Line. We started near the Whitney Museum, but you can start on it in other places too.

Best travel tip is to always carry a major credit card, not a debit card. This is helpful in the case of unexpected expenses and is easier to dispute charges if there are any mishaps.

Dollar is the best car rental agency if you are flying out on Alaska Airlines because that Terminal is closest to reach by AirTrain from Dollar. The agents were super friendly, and allowed me to switch my car type from Minivan to compact car with no additional fees. Be sure to double check that the car is fully functional. We drove away with one of the taillights out. However, we were able to swap cars very quickly once we realized the issue. I’d recommend filling up the gas tank at a station about 10 miles from the car rental agency to save money. Don’t do the prepay option unless you want to spend a lot more money. The cool thing about getting gas in Jersey—you don’t have to pump it yourself! Gas attendants will do it for you, so stay in your cozy warm car. :)

When traveling in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York, paying for EZ Pass up front will save you time and money. We traveled in upstate New York. I am sure it would be even more applicable in New York City. You don't have to avoid the tolls. You can move quickly through the EZ Pass toll lanes. Trying to do it any other way will cause delays and aggravation.

I have no real complaints about Newark. It DOES take quite a while to get from NY Penn to the Thrifty lot though. It takes about 1:15 from the train departure time since you have the EWR train (40mins) then another 30mins on the AirTrain to the very last station for the car rentals. But it did go smoothly and the lot was right at the exit from the AirTrain so it was easy to find and get out of. Returning is a little tricky as the Newark Airport has a LOT of signs but if you keep following for Rental Car Return you'll find it soon enough. Overall a good experience. Also fill up in Newark, NJ if possible because the gas near the airport is much more expensive.

Come with local currency, just don't exchange at the airport--much too expensive. Similarly, buy a telephone SIM card at a phone store in town.

If renting a car come a little early to account for time needed to drop off the car. Wear slip on shoes and if you can check your bag do it. Remember that checking your bag must be done 45 minutes before the flight takes off, so do that even if you're checking in remotely. Avoid the extra fee for checking in at the gate itself. If you are running a bluetooth headset remember to throw on airplane mode before you enable the headset, just saves you the bit of trouble before you board the plane. There is nothing wrong with having multiple personal bags as long as they can fit inside of a single overall personal bag that is no larger than the regulations. Gum, it's simple but an effective way to get rid of the sinus pressure when changing altitudes. If carrying a game system in a carry on bag, make sure it's close to the cellphone, for ease when going through the TSA screening.

Make sure you always have a copy of your insurance with you as well as a copy of your reservation. Also helps if you have both a credit card and debit card in case the company does not accept debit cards...Good idea to always look the car over and point out any dents or markings before you drive the car out of the lot!...Always be courteous and respectful to the representative..just how you would like to be treated!...and always fill up the gas BEFORE you return it to save money!...Call the rental car company in advance if your flight is delayed an extraordinary amount of time!

Rental car companies are all accessed via sky train from the main terminals, so choosing a company based on price or past history will not mean you must travel off site. I suggest you have a general idea of the main highways you need to access from the airport ahead of time, as the signage comes quickly, and it is not always easy to pick out the highway you want if you have no idea. GPS or your smart phone is a good idea. Newark airport is convenient for spots in New Jersey, as well as New York City, so don't be scared off that you might be in NJ versus NY. You may actually be closer to your destination than JFK or LaGuardia. When you get back to the airport for your return flight, I suggest you allow a few extra minutes, as my experience with the security lines has been that they are no very fast. 20 to 30 minutes to get through security did not seem uncommon. And remember that there are a million things to do in New Jersey and the surrounding area. Have fun.

If you're coming from New Jersey Transit/Amtrak, plan a half an hour of extra time. I thought picking up a car at Newark versus in the city would be no big deal because it's easily accessible via NJ Transit from Penn Station. What I didn't realize is that the rental cars are on the exact opposite end of the airport and Airtrain takes a solid 30+ minutes to get there, doubling the commute time. Further, the Airtrain broke down on my way back and I was stuck for hours, unable to get to the train station because there is no other transportation available between the terminals and the train station, not even cabs. That said, the attendants at the Airtrain were incredibly patient and helpful - more so than I generally expect in a situation like that. When the Airtrain is functioning, despite taking a fairly long time, it is a door-to-door solution that makes Newark car rentals more accessible than almost any other airport in New York (for Manhattan residents) when the price is right.

Many airport employees available for assistance and information. Airtran makes getting around Newark airport easy. Terminal C has the best food options. Love the tablets they provide for entertainment. Newark airport should add water filling stations for water bottles. Having to fill a water bottle with a standard fountain is messy and takes too long.

Have a physical copy of your reservation available Talk to locals (can be car rental personnell) to understand road requirements (tolls, etc). In major areas it's well worth having EZ pass toll Ask rental personnel where the nearest gas stations to the airport are if you want to fill up instead of prepaying

Arrive at the airport early. Gates may change, this will reduce stressful last minute runs to the gate. Bring a refillable water bottle. Most airports have refill stations. This will allow more money for purchasing food at the airport. Pack your bags in anticipation of what will need to be unpacked at the security screening. This will make everyone's experience a more enjoyable one since the line will move quicker.

1. Always reserve the smallest size car, assuming it's enough for the amount of people and luggage requirements. 2. Don't wait for the last minute, reserve at least a week ahead. 3. Try off airport locations to save on fees, and airport charges. 4. Take a week rental if renting for 4 or more days, as it will usually be cheaper. 5. Check travel or coupon websites for discount codes / coupons. 6. Join the company's frequent travelers club, as it will usually get u discounts and/or upgrades.
